Can’t Stand Me: The Story

3b4

What do you find more unbearable: watching a video of yourself, or listening to a recording of your voice? Why?

The young lad stared wearily at his computer screen. After hours of mindlessly browsing the internet, he happened to bump into a fairly interesting page which presented the question above.

“This doesn’t even make sense. Wouldn’t one be used to listening and watching him or herself, being in the digital age and all? Sheesh, I see and hear myself in these online videos I make every single day that it’s getting a bit annoying.”

“That doesn’t even answer the question at all, young man,” a voice suddenly popped up behind him. Looking reluctantly behind the source of the voice, a younger girl came to his view, who was all smiles.

“Nobody needs your opinions, Maddie,” he replied without a second thought. As much as the girl looked cute in her long flowing white sleeping gown, she was one hell of an annoying sister.

“Shouldn’t you think about this question more? I mean, it looks a bit deep despite being a simple question.”

He will never understand in his lifetime how could this girl always manages to bother him.

“Well okay then,” he answered with a defeated tone. “How would you interpret this question?”

Cough Cough.

“You see, dear brother, if we would analyze the given choices, one can clearly see what the question is trying to evoke. Watching a video of yourself, or listening to a recording of your voice? A video, or an audio.”

Maddie couldn’t help but smile at her next statement.

“Actions, or words.”

The lad sighed. “Aren’t you overanalying this a bit too mu–”

“Hep! I’m not done yet,” she quickly interjected. “As we can see, this question is actually a guise to the real issue at hand:  Are you more conscious of your actions, or your words? Don’t you see how genius it is? And now, MY opinion on this is to be more conscious of your actions. Why did I reach to such a conclusion? Why of course, I based this on a famous quote you surely must be familiar with: Actions speak loader than words. Words may have a certain meaning to them, but actions are a totally different story. An action could be interpreted in a multitude of ways, more than what words could only ever present. And with this, pressure builds up once we become conscious of our own actions, thus leading to uneasiness.”

Silence reigned the whole room as soon as she finished her speech, and he could do nothing but stare at her.

“I think listening to a recording of my voice is much more unbearable, since I sound awkward in those recorders,” he finally spoke, breaking the fragile silence. “Sounds better and far more understandable, right?”

“What? That was some boring answer right there!”

“And no one would bat an eye.”

Maddie could not take this any longer. She furiously stormed out of his room, slamming the door in the process. Her complains could be heard just outside the door, shouting something about having the most boring brother ever.

Just another day at this household.

“Well then, it wouldn’t hurt to blog this, will it…”

Based from this question.

Speed writing for the sake of having a story. Hope you liked it!

  1. You gave this prompt a whole different meaning (or should I say your sister did) and since I haven’t written my one yet, I think it will be better than it was going to be originally.

  2. WOW. This is a very interesting interpretation of this prompt! I’m really surprised! And you wrote it so well! Awesome work!

Although, I do agree with the brother. I think the sister is over-thinking it too much 😛

    Great story! Keep it up!

    All the best!
